Many Spanish houses are build arround a patio, it's a small uncovered courtyard. The idea came from the Romans, and was further established by the Moors. It has many advantages; on a patio you're at home and meanwhile outside, you're protected from the sun, the heat and the strong light.
The walls of the patio are covered by plants and flowers, in the middle of the patio there is often a fountain.
